Coordinadora Civil and Intermón Oxfam Spain are launching an international campaign, requesting the IMF to put an end to conditionalities on Nicaragua and establish an open dialogue on these restrictions. The success of this initiative could lead to a profund analysis of the demands imposed by IFIs on poor countries.

Call for action !

Eighty per cent of Nicaraguan people live on less than 2 dollars a day. Seven out of ten Nicaraguan children are out of secondary school. In spite of this, the IMF demands the government to reduce public spending to the maximum, which also implies not to achieve the Millennium Goals.

On account of this, Coordinadora Civil and Intermón Oxfam Spain are launching an international campaign, requesting the IMF to put an end to conditionalities on Nicaragua and establish an open dialogue on these restrictions and their impact on the country.

The aim is to put an end to IMF conditionalities, which result, among other things, in frozen salaries for public servants in the areas of health and education until the year 2008 and limit investment in both sectors.

The campaign consists in developing actions such as sending an e-mail to Rodrigo Rato, IMF Managing Director, through THIS WEBSITE (spanish language) which will give all citizens the chance to send a message personally requesting the IMF to put an end to restrictions imposed on Nicaragua.

Besides, Coordinadora Civil will be distributing a letter including this same text to their members and partners so that they could re-send it to the IMF.

Spanish citizens, in solidarity with the situation in Nicaragua will be sending postcards addressed to the IMF from their own country. Oxfam Intermon estimates that about 200,000 e-mails and 60,000 physical postcards will be sent.

The campaign will be running until September when the IMF holds its annual meeting. On this occasion, the number of e-mails sent will be communicated to the International Monetary Fund. This campaign will be joined by Oxfam France, UK and other European NGOs. The success of this initiative could lead to a profund analysis of the demands imposed by IFIs on poor countries.
