20 March: Global Day of Action against War and Occupation
Source: United for Peace & Justice

Momentum is building around the world for the Global Day of Action against War and Occupation on Saturday 20 March, the one-year anniversary of the US bombing and invasion of Iraq. On that day, people on every continent will take to the streets to say YES to peace and NO to pre-emptive war and occupation.

Nearly 400 peace marches will occur around the world, calling for an end to the occupation of Iraq and Bush's militaristic foreign policies, and highlight the linkages between the occupations of Iraq and Palestine.

March 20 will be the first time the world's "other superpower," as The New York Times described it, will take center stage since 15 February 2003 when more than 15 million people across the globe expressed their opposition to Bush's looming war on Iraq.

The protests in United States will also address on the domestic impact of Bush's foreign policies growing opposition to the USA PATRIOT Act, which has authorized political arrests, indefinite detentions, domestic spying, and religious and racial profiling. The demostrations will call for an end to the mass detentions and deportations of innocent immigrants in the name of fighting terrorism, and say no to massive military spending amidst vast cuts in vital domestic social and economic programs.

World Tribunal on Iraq
Taking their cue from the 1967 Russell Tribunal formed to investigate crimes committed by the US and allies in Vietnam, groups around the world are organizing the World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI). The WTI has been actively supported by the Jakarta Peace Consensus and the anti-war assemblies that converged at the recent European Social Forum in Paris and the World Social Forum in Mumbai, India. Different hearings and events have been and will be held as globally as the anti-war movement: in London, Monterrey, Brussels, Hiroshima, Paris, Costa Rica, Munich, Mumbai, Barcelona, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Rome – and in New York. The final Tribunal session will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, on 20 March 2005.
