Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development

The Monterrey Consensus of the 2002 International Conference on Financing for Development called for a follow-up international conference to review the implementation of the Consensus. In its resolution 62/187 of 19 December 2007, the UN General Assembly decided that the Follow-up International Conference to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus would be held in Doha, Qatar, from 29 November to 2 December 2008. The aim was to review the implementation of Monterrey's decisions and determine the new initiatives that would be necessary to meet the increasingly compromised Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Participants urged that aid commitments be maintained despite the global economic crisis and called for the convening of an inclusive international conference under United Nations auspices to review the international financial and monetary architecture.

The Doha International Conference on Financing for Development was a “missed opportunity” and concrete actions have been postponed, despite the fact that the needs of poor and disadvantaged people in developing countries cannot be postponed.
