G8 Summit , 6-8 June 2007

From June 6 to 8, the leaders of the eight most industrialised nations (G8) met for their annual summit in Heiligendamm, Germany. The G8 members are Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, the United States, Canada and Russia. "Growth and responsibility" are the central themes of Germany's G8 presidency in 2007. Shaping globalization and helping Africa to develop were key focuses of the meeting in Heiligendamm. At the 2005 G8 Summit in Gleneagles the world's richest countries made several promises towards Africa's development. But these promises have not been kept. In fact, the G8 countries gave less aid in 2006 than in 2005. Civil society groups and anti-globalization movements held an G8-alternative summit in Rostock, from June 5 to 7.

 Against globalization and its non-emancipatory responses
