|How the peoples from the South learned their way
According to a Mapuche legend, a cloud, drifting in the wind, lost its path towards life. When it saw the ostrich running below in a determined fashion, it dropped down to ask directions. Thus the cloud became fog. People and animals were left wandering and disoriented, except for the ostrich, which ran quickly away. The cloud looked at the ostrich's tracks and, to use them to find its way towards life, took them up into the sky and left them there among the stars. Since then the Mapuches call both the ostrich and the Southern Cross constellation "choike". And anyone who doesn't want to chase after the ostrich can follow the Southern Cross to find their way.
