AIDS: wealth before health
Public health policies and legislation are being introduced which are not actually rooted in women's experiences. As a consequence, their implementation is at huge cost to women, who in their role as primary unpaid carers of their sick relatives, have in fact formed the backbone of the Aids response in the most affected communities.

Patents and medicines
As the negotiations wound down to a close at the Intergovernmental Working Group on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property, a familiar pattern unfolded. To the dismay of all those who saw in the IGWG an opportunity to make a real difference in a starkly iniquitous situation - a situation where medicines required the most for the world's poorest and most vulnerable populations are rarely researched or made accessible and affordable - the conclusions arrived at, may well make little or no dent in the present situation.

Health and health services, goods for sale
People living in poor countries around the world suffer from a scandalous and dangerous shortage of healthcare. Life expectancy for many is less than 50 years – in some less than 40 – while life expectancy in many rich countries is around 80 years. Meanwhile, the rich world claims billions of dollars in debt payments from these countries, often for loans that should not have been given in the first place, putting the realisation of decent health services still further out of reach.

Sexual and reproductive rights
Sexual rights are an important battlefield in our fight against poverty. Our work for inclusion and for the realisation of the rights of excluded people cannot be complete if we don’t consider sexual rights as a necessary element that affects many other domains of development work. Taking sexuality into consideration means to have respect for the people that we work with and to treat them as citizens.
