Peru: uncontacted indians flee as loggers invade
Loggers operating illegally in the Purús National Park in Peru are causing large numbers of uncontacted Indians to flee from their traditional territory. The nomadic Piro Indians have been forced across the border into Brazil, bringing them into conflict with other isolated Indians whose territory they are now occupying.

Guaraní indians unite
The unity of Guaraní Indians, whose communities are spread out over five South American nations, was sealed in a gathering that ended Tuesday with a march by around 8,000 demonstrators in the southern Brazilian city of Sao Gabriel, where indigenous hero Sepé Tiarajú died on Feb. 7, 1756.

Violent police action against the Tupinikim and Guarani peoples
State policemen carried out a war operation to take the Tupinikim and Guarani indigenous peoples in the Brazilian state of Espirito out of the lands they had taken back peacefully in May 2005 from Aracruz Celulose, the pulp mill giant who controlled the land for almost 40 years.

In four open letters addressed to all of the armed actors in Colombia's civil war, 47 organisations of indigenous people, afro-Colombians, peasant farmers, women, local residents and trade unionists from the jungle province of Chocó demand respect for their territory and their neutrality in the armed conflict.
