Veracel timber certification would be yet another disaster for the Forest Stewardship Council
The wood-pulp producing company Veracel has applied for FSC certification of its tree plantations in the Brazilian state of Bahia. A large number of organizations are opposing this certification, on the grounds that these plantations have resulted in widespread negative social and environmental impacts.

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) has released the Red List of Threatened Species for 2007 naming habitat loss, hunting and climate change among the causes of sliding more than 16,000 species closer to extinction.

The Coca-Cola company has recently announced, to much fanfare, a three-year, US$20 million partnership with the World Wildlife Fund on water conservation. But the announcement deserves scrutiny primarily because it is the Coca-Cola company that is announcing water conservation projects.
