Campaña hacia los representantes de los estados miembros en la ONU para impulsar la construcción de una Arquitectura de Género en la organización, aprovechando la realización de la 52ª sesión de la Comisión Jurídica y Social de la Mujer.

POR LA CONSTRUCCIÓN DE UNA ONU QUE REALMENTE TRABAJE PARA LAS MUJERES

PROPUESTA DE CARTA PARA ENVIAR LO MÁS PRONTO POSIBLE AL MINISTERIO DE RELACIONES EXTERIORES DE CADA PAIS CON COPIA A LA MISIÓN DE LAS NACIONES uNIDAS EN NUEVA YORK

Mi nombre es ******* y estoy escribiendo en representación de XXORGANIZACIONXX, una organización que trabaja por/para XXXDESCRIPCION DEL TRABAJOXX. Le escribo porque mi organización está siguiendo de cerca las deliberaciones actuales de la Comisión del Estatus Jurídico y Social de la Mujer de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York, enfocada este año en el tema "Financiamiento para la Igualdad de Género y el Empoderamiento de las Mujeres".

Entendemos que varios países han propuesta que se incluya lenguaje en el documento resultado de la sesión, con un llamado para que haya una entidad de mujeres más fuerte y unificada, así como para fortalecer los procesos de transversalización de género en la ONU. Estas cuestiones no tienen importancia solamente en Nueva York, sino que son vitales para nuestro trabajo sobre igualdad de género aquí en XXPAISXXX. Dado el mandato de la Comisión de avanzar esta agenda y dado el tema específico de la sesión annual de la Comisión, vemo la inclusión de un fuerte apoyo al fortalecimiento de la arquitectura de género de la ONU como esencial para el mismo éxito de la Comisión. De hecho, creemos que no habrá un financiamiento para la igualdad de género y el empoderamiento de las mujeres que sea realmente efectivo, si el Sistema de la ONU no es reformado y fortalecido en cuanto a estos temas.

Por lo tanto le urgimos a apoyar la inclusión de dicho lenguaje en el documento de conclusiones que será resultado de la sesión de la Comisión este año.

Como nuestro representante en Nueva York, usted tiene el poder de asegurar que la reforma a la arquitectura de género de la ONU, la cual es vital para todas las mujeres de nuestro país, se lleve a cabo.

Helpful statement delivered by Tonga on behalf of the Pacific Islands Forum group which includes at para 20 strong support for GEAR. The Pacific Islands Forum includes Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

"20. The Pacific recognises the vital role of the United Nations agencies in advancing gender equality in our region. We are therefore keen to see the implementation of reforms that will establish a strengthened single UN agency dedicated to the advancement of women led by an Under Secretary General and that combines normative and operational functions. We hope this will elad to increased UN engagement and support in the Pacific; improved coordination and collaboration amongs UN agencies at both regional and country level; and more effective engagement with regional organisations on this issue."

AI's Pacific Islands research and campaign staff (Apolosi Bose and Haider Kikabhoy) were in New York this week and met with Pacific Islands Missions. The key movers and shakers on GEAR in this region are and will likely remain Papua New Guinea (Permanent Rep today said he's very supportive), Fiji (which was main sponsor of the para 20 language above), Tonga (Chair of Pacific Islands Forum Group until Sep/Oct 2008) and New Zealand (which will likely Chair PIFG from Oct 2008, and which seems to support GEAR but also appreciate that this support is more effective if kept low-profile). We invited Fiji and PNG Ambassadors to the breakfast tomorrow but both couldn't make it at such short notice. We think that both Pacific Islands reps might like to discuss GEAR later with other member states that do go to the breakfast, and in particular to Pakistan.

Apolosi and Haider also met this week with some regional NGOs that would like to join the GEAR campaign (eg. see the two listed below). These NGOs couldn't get into room where the GEAR campaign was being launched yesterday but they would like to find out more about GEAR activism for and in their region. AI will send them an electronic version of the GEAR campaign statement, but it would be good if Asia-Pacific Focal points could contact them directly please - we'll send the email addresses to you.
