The president of the United Nations General Assembly wants to hear the voices of civil society on the global financial and economic crisis and its impact on development.

In the wake of the global financial and economic crisis, the President of the UN General Assembly, Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, set up a commission of experts chaired by Nobel Prize Laureate Joseph Stiglitz, whose mandate includes putting forward “credible and feasible proposals for reforming the international monetary and financial system in the best interest of the international community”. The Commission of Experts of the President of the UN General Assembly on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System will present its final report in early April 2009.

The Office of the President of the General Assembly has asked the United Nations Non Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS) to consult with civil society groups across the globe and to compile their views into a single report that will be presented to the Commission as an official input to their deliberations. NGLS has set up an on-line consultation open to all civil society organizations to support this effort. Due to the short time frame of the Commission’s work, a round of consultations is running from 26 January to 13 February 2009 intended to contribute to preparations of next meeting of the Commission in March.
