Feminist activists condemn the Government of Nicaragua at the Americas Social Forum in Guatemala.

October 11, 2008

As women and feminists present in the Social Forum of the Americas in Guatemala, we energetically condemn the government of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua for recent egregious violations against women’s rights including:

* Physical violence and political persecution of feminists and their organizations
* Destruction and removal of files and information from the offices of the Research Center for Communication (CINCO) and from the Autonomous Women’s Movement (MAM) of Nicaragua
* A call to the people of Nicaragua to mobilize and take mob-style actions against feminists
* The order of search and seizure against a women’s group in Matagalpa called Grupo Venancia

These acts are part of an orchestrated campaign to criminalize feminists for their work to re-instate the right to therapeutic abortion (in cases where the mother’s life is at stake) and as reprisal for the denouncements of the sexual abuse of Zoila America by Daniel Ortega generated by many women’s organizations.

These acts reflect an institutionalized policy of misogyny and represent serious violations of human rights committed by the Nicaraguan state against defenders of the rights of women.

We hold President Daniel Ortega and his government responsible for all of the physical, psychological and economic damage carried out against these women and the organizations that they are a part of.

We are calling on all those people who believe in democracy and who believe that – in the spirit of this Forum – another world is possible, to condemn these criminal actions and actively support Nicaraguan feminists in their struggles for basic human rights and to put a stop to the violence perpetrated by the Nicaraguan state in the form of a witch hunt.

They fear us because we have no fear

A hit against one of us is a hit against all of us

I have a question more than a comment. My mother and father are looking into retiring to Nicaragua. Is it a safe place for them to go? Do female expats get harrassed, attacked, or abused in any way?

I wish to point something out as well. Not much will change if woman are not able, taught, and educated to raise their sons properly, and carefully. I have seen this first hand, and am now living with the consequences of it. My daughter is half Nicaraguan, my life has been he.. for 13 years now. Many sons are never to be held responsible, nor accountable for their behaviour. If they rape, they are welcome home, if they abuse alcohol, they are given money, or handed more because they like it, the woman are not making them happy if they are fighting against this for the good of their children, and that's just to name 2 examples, it goes on from there. These are the uneducated woman who support their sons behaviour. In many cases, the mother has little to no education, the sons are suppost to learn in church. When the sons do not follow the church teachings, they are often hit, sent to live on the streets, or the parents put up with the sons criminal behaviours while living at home and it is ignored while the family continues attending church nightly. This is in just a small city alone. I have seen churches packed full of the same hard core criminals that I knew of. I live first hand with all of this. I don't think I would come back alive if I went to visit his family there unfortunatly. It is very complicated. It starts with dealing with the after effects of war, and then education of the children. There is not much anyone can do with the grown mens attitude, it is far to convenient for them to treat women this way. They are hard-core bullies.

The attacks promoted by the Nicaraguan government against the defenders of women’s human rights have not been limited to legal proceeding against them, but are being expressed in ongoing persecution and direct threats against their lives and the lives of their families.
