The Forty-seventh Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) will be held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, during April 3th - 5th, 2006. As in the past, the Bank and the host country are organizing a series of seminars on topics of interest to participants. This year, the meeting concentrates a special interest to civil society and to several governments that will send their representatives into the Governors Assembly: the debt cancelation of the poorest Latin American countries is on the Annual Meetings agenda.

Social organisations and some political leaders demand the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) debt cancellation for the poorest Latin American countries. However, upon conclusion of the 47th IDB Annual Meeting, the issue remains pending.

InterAmerican Development Bank refusal to grant debt relief a blow to Bolivia
During the IBD Annual Meeting, the directors of the Bank had an opportunity to help end the cycle of poverty that afflicts almost 3.5 million people in Bolivia. But the IDB postponed making a decision until the end of the year. This delay has dire consequences.

Restructuring, the IDB’s midlife crisis - Time to guarantee modernization or to modernize guarantees?
It is rumored that the new president of the IDB will unveil a bold plan for re-structuring the institution. Insiders report that the plan will “streamline” the loan preparation process, seen by many at the IDB as being too slow and costly. Critics fear that it will remove the few social and environmental safeguards currently employed by the bank, and reduce its capacity to insure sustainable outcomes from its lending.
